Dual citizenship?

By Napoleon Black

TEXT (1 John 2:15)

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. NIV

Don't love the world's ways. Don't love the world's goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Message

Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. NLT

COMMENTARY

Spiritual love cannot be divided. We either love God or we love the world. We cannot have the world on a pedestal and God on the same pedestal. We cannot be loyal to the world and loyal to the kingdom of Heaven at the same time. We cannot be loyal to the god of this world and the God of Heaven. In short we cannot hold dual citizenship.

John explains that anyone who wants to hold that kind of dual citizenship does not love God. God’s love has not been shed abroad in such a heart. Hankering after the ways of the world, deliberately wishing for its ‘benefits’ shows that such a person still is lost.

Love is a strong unconditional commitment to another. Love is an act of trust and surrender to another. Love is an act of celebrating the virtues of another. Love holds back nothing of worth and value to the object of one’s love. Therefore to love the world is to deny the Kingdom of God.

Something to Meditate on:

Spiritual loving is selective living

A decision I need to make

Are there things of the world that I am holding on to?
