TEXT (Col. 3: 6)

10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator [NIV]

Now you're dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete. [MSG]

10 Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him. [NLT]

COMMENTARY

Henry David Thoreau made the brilliant observation that “Every generation laughs at the old fashions, but follows religiously the new.” Garbaddin, Frill Skirts, Crimplin, Bell Bottoms, Rayon, Platform Shoes are just a few of the fashions of yester-year (this may date some of you ). The truth is that while some fashions may make a come back the vast majority become obsolete. Such is the attitude the disciple needs to adopt when it comes on the wicked deeds of the former life. The reality of being united with Christ demands an abhorrence for the ill fitting clothes of the former life. After the spring cleaning activity to throw out all that belong to the old life one needs a new wardrobe.

The recommended garment of the new wardrobe of the disciple are the opposite of the old garb. Paul uses ‘Have put on’ which suggests that he is assuming that this is an act already completed by his readers. Very matter-of-factly, it is to be expected. The new garments (described in 3: 12ff) are specially designed to fit the disciple. They are made the grand designer, the same designer who etched out every crevice of the Grand Canyon, and every shade of green in the rain forest and the kaleidoscope of colours of fish in the coral reef. The new garments bear the mark of Christ. His label is blatantly stamped on them. The wearer becomes immediately conspicuous. People will take note hat he/she has been with Christ. This designer not only makes outstanding fashion but he also offers it free. He gives a credit card without a spending limit and invites us to shop in the expansive mall called Grace. Isn’t it a good day to pray ‘Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart’?

Something to Meditate on:
Am I more into the fashion of the catwalk than the fashion of Christ?

A decision I need to make
I will make a date to visit the Mall of Grace.
